The estates closed in 2005. The railway that served them still runs, the fortress their trade paid for still stands, and the volcano the cane was planted on can still be climbed before lunch.
The Sugar Train
Narrow-gauge track was laid around the north of the island between 1912 and 1926 to bring cane down to the mill at Basseterre. The mill shut in 2005 and the line should have gone with it. Instead the double-decker cars still run roughly half the circuit, past the ruined estates the rails were built to serve, Atlantic on one side and mountain on the other, in a little over three hours.

Mount Liamuiga
St Kitts is one volcano with towns around its foot. The climb to the crater rim starts in old cane terraces, turns to rainforest, then to a rooted scramble where a rope earns its keep. Reckon on five to six hours return and proper mud. The payoff is a green bowl a thousand feet deep with cloud spilling over the far lip.

Brimstone Hill
The fortress went up over the best part of a century, built by enslaved labour from black volcanic stone quarried out of the hill itself, until the guns sat 750 feet above the sea. It is a World Heritage site today. From the Citadel you can pick out Sint Eustatius, Saba and Nevis in one turn of the head.
